So the official Equestria Girls trailer is out now. If you haven’t seen it, you can watch it here.
Know what I notice about it though?
A distinct lack of ANY kind of ‘anthrofication’ like the ‘official’ picture shows, a distinct lack of ANY KIND of cutie mark on their faces, and that LIKE WITH PONIES they look much better actually ANIMATED than they did in their pre-release pictures.
Also everyone in the world has weird skin colors, not just the girls, so that’s just an oddity of the way it works.
Is it going to be an amazing blockbuster pony hit that everyone has been waiting for? …Eh, probably not from just the premise the trailer showed. But you know what, I’m still going to give it a chance!
Never in a MILLION YEARS would I have thought that I’d be watching and enjoying My Little Pony, especially when the pictures they showed for it before the episodes aired looked like THIS:
EVERYONE I knew thought these looked horrible, and early in the fandom the official vectors LOOKED HORRIBLE. Does anyone remember that? Of Twilight’s eyes almost melting out of her eyes because they couldn’t take 5 minutes to re-align them? Of using the same GOD AWFUL vectors that made everyone cringe and go “What were they thinking!?” when you looked at them?
They’re so long gone and forgotten about that I can’t even have an easy time LOOKING for them now! There’s so much beautiful vectorized version of the show that LOOKS GOOD that I have to wade through the good to find the BAD now!
And no one I knew would’ve ever guessed the show was going to be GOOD. Or even anywhere near 1/4th as popular as it actually became.
So no, I’m not judging Equestria Girls now, or ever, solely on how it LOOKS. If it’s bad, it’s bad because it’s a bad movie, not because I judged it to be bad before watching it.
These are the people who wrote and animated the show, this movie most likely being an executive mandate. They’ve shown me they can turn bad concepts into GOOD concepts, so I want to see what they can do.
Maybe I’m not super excited, but I think people are too easily willing to jump down it’s throat without giving it a chance, when they already did so when they got into the show in the first place.
